Today’s New York has much less crime than before, is much cleaner than before, and is much more expensive than ever. It is a place where some people make six numbers are considered middle class. Almost all of Manhattan and the “ccool parts” of Brooklyn are so hygienic, safety is on par with a theme park.
Over the years, I have found that people tend to associate destinations with their conflicts of the 90s. Mention that you are going to Cambodia, Bosnia, or South Africa, and people will often react as if Pol Pot were still alive; the Serbian bombs fell and apartheid ended yesterday. That is not the matter. Each of these countries has changed enormously since the 1990s, and with appropriate research and preparation, it is safe to travel today.
This also applies to New York. Concrete example? In the episode of Friends, where Frank Jr. visits Phoebe for the first time in New York, filmed in 1996, Frank says, “Yes, I thought maybe we could go to Times Square and pick up ninja stars.
